WAE Summer Institute—May 15-17

Patrick Bahls

We are pleased to announce that this summer’s WAE Institute will be focused on STEM writing and feature Patrick Bahls, Professor of Mathematics and Director of the University Honors Program at the University of North Carolina, Asheville. Throughout his twenty-year career in higher education Bahls has made considerable use of writing in mathematics courses at every level. During the past decade, he has developed expertise on writing in the disciplines, writing across the curriculum, and writing-to-learn, having served as the chair of UNC Asheville's committee on writing-intensive courses, as the university's writing coordinator, and as a member of the university's first-year writing committee.

The author of several research articles on writing and writing instruction, Bahls has studied everything from math majors' development as members of the mathematical discourse community to the effect of technical typesetting software on STEM students' composition processes. His text, Student Writing in the Quantitative Disciplines: A Guide for College Faculty, was published by Jossey-Bass in 2012.

The application process will be open in early spring semester for participants. Stipends of $1000 will be offered to accepted faculty and space will be limited. Questions? Write to Joonna Trapp at joonna.trapp@emory.edu or call 7-6254.

If you would like to be added to a newly developing WAE email list to advertise WAE opportunities (not spam), please let us know. joonna.trapp@emory.edu
